TRENT UNIVERSITY
Located just north of the city; Trent University is one of Canada’s finest undergraduate universities. The University is renowned for striking a unique balance between outstanding teaching and leading-edge research. Trent is internationally renowned for its mid-century modern campus by Canadian architect Ron Thom. The heart of the campus represents among the most successful examples of the connection of material to building, and of building to landscape. Thom adapted the best features of the International Style, melding and softening Brutalism with Prairie influences reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright.
MARKET HALL
For almost one hundred and twenty years Market Hall has been a prominent icon in the heart of downtown Peterborough. Once home to the City’s market it is now a 350 seat performing arts space with renowned acoustics. In 2010 the hall will undergo a multi-million dollar renovation, its first in 25 years, that will see the restoration of the interior complimenting a state of the art technical re-fit of the theatre.
PETERBOROUGH DRILL HALL AND ARMOURY
An imposing two storey Romanesque brick structure, this National Historic Site has been home over the years to the 57th Regiment, the 3rd Prince of Wales’ Canadian Dragoons and the 24th Field Battery. Today it houses “Moro” Company, Hastings-Prince Edward Regiment. The Officer’s Mess is a virtual museum of the involvement of Peterborough’s citizens in Canadian military conflict for over a century.
ST. PAUL’S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Completed in 1859 and expanded to its present form in 1883-85; the church also boasts a 1959 addition by architect Eberhard Zeidler. St. Paul’s is perhaps the best preserved Gothic Revival church in Peterborough. Known for its Robert McCausland stained glass windows, grand pipe organ and magnificent curving sanctuary space, the tower also sports, a “graffiti gallery” with inscriptions dating back over a century.
Millennium Park
Designed for the new millennium, Millennium Park, adjacent the Otonabee River Trail, was opened in 2001 as a linear park along the shores of the Otonabee River. The area was designed as peaceful natural parkland amongst the hard surfaces of the downtown core. It actually went undiscovered for a time period until community events such as the DBIA Ribfest, Greek Festival and the Silver Bean Café began to attract considerable attention from visitors and residents. Today, Millennium Park is continually filled with friends of the park either relaxing with a cup of java and a special treat or simply enjoying the delightful sounds and attractions of a variety of special events taking place in the park.
The Peterborough County Courthouse
The Peterborough County Courthouse building holds a commanding position overlooking Victoria Park. Built of cut stone with a central portico, it is considered one of the finest examples of courthouse architecture in Ontario. It continues to house the Courthouse, County Council Chambers and administrative offices, and until recently, the County Jail.
